Benefits
Meals: The hospital provides all meals consumed while on the premises at no charge to the resident. Family members may join the resident at no charge on Sundays and holidays as well as five additional times per month.
Bookstore: Books and medical equipment may be purchased through the bookstore located on the Akron City Hospital campus.
Parking: Free parking is available to all residents.
Shuttle Service: Two shuttle buses provide door-to-door service between Akron City Hospital and St. Thomas Hospital (about a ten-minute ride). The shuttles are equipped with phones.
Lab Coats: Each new resident is issued three lab coats which may be reordered yearly.
Laundry: A laundry service for resident lab coats is provided at no cost.
Funding for Educational Conferences: Residents are provided funding for educational conferences based on departmental policies.
Professional Liability Insurance Coverage: Residents are covered by the hospital’s professional liability insurance while performing duties within the scope of their residency training.
Vacation: Three weeks of vacation are allotted during each year of training.
Leave of Absence:
- Medical Leave: Medical leave is granted in accordance with the Administrative Policy Manual and House Staff Manual. These policies may be obtained in the Office of Medical Education.
- Personal Leave: Summa Health System grants unpaid personal leave of absence in accordance with the needs of the resident and the affected department. These policies are contained in the Administrative Policy Manual and House Staff Manual. These policies may be obtained in the Office of Medical Education.
- Family Leave: Summa Health System policies are consistent with the Family and Medical Leave Act of 1993, a copy of which may be obtained from the Office of Human Resources.
Health Club Membership: Each resident is automatically enrolled as a member of the area’s leading health club.
Hospitalization Insurance: Residents may choose from several health plans with varied options suited to individual and family health needs.
Dental Insurance: Dental insurance is provided to residents and their dependents at no cost.
Pharmaceuticals: Prescriptions will be filled by on-site Ritzman Pharmacy for residents and their dependents.
Life Insurance: A life insurance policy is provided at no cost to the residents. Residents may also purchase additional insurance amounting to twice their annual salary at a nominal cost.
Long-term Disability Insurance: Salary protection in the event of permanent and total disability amounts to 60 percent of the resident’s salary. This coverage pays until the age of 65.
Vision Care: The vision care policy allows for partial reimbursement for the cost of eye examinations, frames and lenses for residents and their dependents.
Relocation Allowance: Should the relocation to Summa Health System involve a financial hardship, all new incoming residents may request in advance a maximum of $1,000, repayment of which is accomplished by salary deductions of $50 per pay from the first year’s salary.
On-call Quarters: The on-call quarters are equipped with a kitchen that is stocked daily with a variety of foods. A recreational lounge area is provided for the convenience of the residents. The lounge includes a pool table, ping-pong table, piano, VCR, televisions and a computer terminal for accessing patient and laboratory information.
Child Care: On a space-available basis, Summa Health System offers the Henry Center for Child Care and Learning. The center is located on the Akron City Hospital campus.
House Staff Spouses’ Club: The House Staff Spouses’ Club is an organization consisting of spouses and future spouses of the resident staff. The club is active in the Akron area and contributes to fulfillment and friendship among its members. Members of the club are encouraged to participate in hospital functions and a variety of club activities. A monthly newsletter is generated to keep all members informed of current hospital, community and special events.
